For an interface, the first thing that needs to be defined is the appearance of the interface. One end of the optical module needs to be plugged in and connected to the electrical signal on the system side, and the other end needs to be adapted to the optical fiber to transmit the optical signal.
When it comes to an optical module type, the basic appearance and structure are determined. No matter which manufacturer it is, the basic dimensions can be adapted to each other.
The multimode wavelength primarily accommodates surface-emitting VCSELs (VCSELs). Surface-emitting VCSELs offer greater cost savings than edge-emitting VCSELs. However, the VCSEL materials used on an industrial scale are only suitable for shorter wavelengths. Modules based on VCSELs are typically multimode optical modules, operating at one or more wavelengths. Research is also underway into the application of few-mode or single-mode VCSELs, and the industry is also conducting research on modes, speeds, materials, and reliability related to the 1060nm wavelength.
In addition to short wavelengths, data center and AI networking also includes 1310nm gray light parallel single-mode transmission and CWDM4 (or FR4) four-wavelength multiplexing.
5G applications utilize CWDM6 wavelengths. In addition to reusing the four wavelengths of CWDM4, it also adds 1351nm and 1371nm.
LWDM wavelengths are also available in DCI campus networks and metropolitan area networks.
DCI long-distance and trunk transmission usually selects the C, C+, and C+L bands for dense wavelength division multiplexing to increase transmission capacity.
PON access networks typically use two, four, or six wavelengths for intergenerational compatibility and BiDi single-fiber wavelength configuration. Simply put, PON fiber-to-the-home should ideally use only one fiber per household for ease of operation and cost reduction.
