Introduce the Types, Male and Female Connectors, and Polarity Classification of MPO/MTP Fiber Optic Patch Cords

November 19, 2025

1.What core qty are available for MPO/MTP ?

Currently, the factory shenzhen kexint -terminated components of MPO connectors can accommodate 6 to 144 optical fibers, among which 8 core MPO polarity classification and 24-core MPO connectors are more common. According to the IEC-61754-7 and EIA/TIA-604-5 (FOCIS 5) standards, 12 optical fibers are usually arranged in one row, and one or more rows of optical fibers can be supported in the same MPO connector. Depending on the number of cores arranged in the connector, it can be classified as a single row (12 cores) or multiple rows (24 cores or more). For 40G MPO-MPO optical fiber patch cords, 12-core MPO multimode ferrules are generally used; for 100G MPO-MPO optical fiber patch cords, 24-core MPO ferrules are generally used. Currently, there are also 16 single-row optical fiber array types in the market, which can be divided into multiple rows to form 32 cores or more. 16/32-core MPO optical fiber connectors will become the best solution for low latency and ultra-high-speed transmission in the next-generation 400G network.

2.Male and Female for MPO/MTP connector

MPO/MTP male and female connectors The MPO/MTP optical fiber connector consists of optical fibers, jackets, coupling components, metal rings, pins (PIN pins), dust caps, etc. The pin part is divided into two forms: male and female. The male connector has two PIN pins, while the female connector has none. The connection between MPO /MTP connectors is precisely aligned through the PIN pins. The two MPO/MTP connectors that are connected to each other must be one male and one female.

3.MPO/MTP polarity

Type A (Straight-Through): The positions of the fiber cores at both ends of the patch cord are the same, that is, 1 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end. The orientations of the Key pins at both ends are opposite, with key up corresponding to key down.

Type B (Interleaved Type): The positions of the fiber cores at both ends of the jumper are opposite, that is, the 1 at one end corresponds to the 12 at the other end, and the 12 at one end corresponds to the 1 at the other end. The orientations of the key pins at both ends are the same, that is, key up corresponds to key up, and key down corresponds to key down.Type C (Interleaved Pair Type): For the MPO jumpers of Type C, the positions of adjacent pairs of fiber cores are crossed. That is, fiber core 1 at one end corresponds to fiber core 2 at the other end, and fiber core 12 at one end corresponds to fiber core 11 at the other end. The orientations of the Key pins at both ends are also opposite, with key up corresponding to key down.

Type C (Interleaved Pair Type): For the MPO jumpers of Type C, the positions of adjacent pairs of fiber cores are crossed. That is, fiber core 1 at one end corresponds to fiber core 2 at the other end, and fiber core 12 at one end corresponds to fiber core 11 at the other end. The orientations of the Key pins at both ends are also opposite, with key up corresponding to key down.
