How to choose the cables for home network?

May 08, 2025

Common types of network cables

1. Category 5e (CAT5e) network cable

Category 5e network cable supports an Ethernet transmission speed of 100Mbps and a transmission frequency of up to 100MHz. It can usually meet most daily Internet access needs and is widely used in home networks.

2. Category 6 (CAT6) network cable

Category 6 network cable supports an Ethernet transmission speed of 1Gbps (gigabit) and a transmission frequency of up to 250MHz. It can better resist crosstalk and electromagnetic interference, and provide more stable and faster data transmission.

3. Category 6a (CAT6a) network cable

Category 6a network cable theoretically supports a transmission speed of 10Gbps and a frequency bandwidth of 500MHz. With strict specifications and standards, it can provide better anti-interference ability and higher bandwidth potential.

4. Category 7 (CAT7) network cable

Category 7 network cable theoretically supports a transmission rate of 10Gbps and a frequency bandwidth of 600MHz. It can provide higher signal transmission quality and anti-interference ability. Due to its high price and excess performance, Category 7 cables are not widely used in homes at present.

Requirements and suggestions for using network cables

Network cable length: In theory, CAT5e, CAT6 and CAT6a network cables can support a transmission distance of 100 meters, but it is recommended to use short-meter network cables when using them to ensure the transmission performance of the network cables.

Wiring location: When using network cables, try to place network devices such as routers in appropriate locations to reduce the length of network cables and wiring complexity, and ensure the coverage and stability of the network.

Shielded and unshielded: Shielded network cables have an additional shielding layer and good anti-interference performance; unshielded network cables are low-cost and flexible to install, which can meet daily needs. If there are electromagnetic interference problems in the use environment, shielded network cables can be selected.

Upgrade and maintenance: The network cable connection can be checked regularly to ensure network stability and security; if the possibility of upgrading the network in the future is considered, Category 6 or Category 7 network cables can be selected.

For most users, Category 5 or Category 6 network cables can already meet daily needs. If there are users with high network experience requirements or high-speed data transmission, Category 6 or Category 7 network cables or even Category 8 network cables can be considered.
